The PFES had a training drill on the 25th & 26th of February 2023 atop Mt Gillen. The Vertical Rescue (VR) team got a lot out of the training.
The piece of machinery is a front end loader which is believed to have fallen off the side of the range back in 1969. Apparently the brakes failed and the operator abandoned the machine before it went over. The machine originally came to rest a little higher up the range than what it is now, but with rain and rock movement, it moved to where it is now. It is fairly well embedded where it is now with little to no chance of moving. There are also no liquids such as fuel or oil leaking after seals had decayed over time.
We thank Rhys Perry and the team from PFES for such great pics and report on this machinery.
